Digital technologies and data are changing the global health landscape, and growing up today—in a digital world—looks a lot different than it did twenty, ten, and even five years ago. More than ever, COVID-19 has made clear that young people have been disproportionately impacted by the acceleration of the digital transformation, and that they are key agents of change in global and local discussions on governing health futures.

In 2021, The Lancet and Financial Times Commission on Governing health futures 2030: Growing up in a digital world launched the GHFutures2030 Youth Network as a platform to co-create and co-lead future research, advocacy, and dissemination of the report.

The Network will bring together young people under the age of thirty invested in the health and wellbeing of young people, and the future of health governance that is being shaped today. The aims of the Network are to build a movement dedicated to digital health governance inspired by the needs of children and young people, generating dialogues, events, and actions that are co-designed and co-governed for and with young people.

Main Objective

The GHFutures2030 Youth Network will:

• Work with young people across all geographies and disciplines to advocate for greater involvement of young people in the design and implementation of policies and programmes related to health, technology, and data

• Support advocacy and dissemination of the Commission’s findings, driven by shared values of inclusion, democracy, solidarity, equity, and human rights

• Hold decision makers accountable for their commitments to health and the equitable and responsible use of technology and data

• Collaborate with other networks engaged in policy change to promote and govern health futures

• Amplify youth voices and mentor members of this network to co-create and co-lead future research, advocacy, and dissemination activities related to governing health futures in a digital world.

The Youth Team

The Youth Team of the Commission Secretariat was created in 2020 to amplify the Commission’s work and directly engage young people in action and dialogue to govern health futures.

The Youth Team aims to:

• Drive a consultative process between Commissioners and young people at the global, regional, and local levels to ensure intergenerational action and ownership of the report recommendations

• Frame future research and dialogue on governing health futures

• Focus on aspects of the Commission’s report that are of particular interest to young people.
